Welcome to LUMAZ
The
Lumber Millers Association of Zambia (LUMAZ) is a
relatively new association which is participating in
and receiving assistance under the European Union
Zambian Export Development Programme 2 (EDP2).
Members of the association specialize in producing
sawn timber and manufactured products utilizing the
non-threatened species Rhodesian Rosewood, Teak and
Mahogany. Whilst several members have their own
concessions, logs are also outsourced to concession
owners operating under Forestry Department licenses.
All materials purchased are
logged and managed sustainably in line with the
current Zambian Forestry Act of 1999.
Under this Act all timber is harvested to a management
plan approved by the Forestry Department and all logs
are inspected, certified and tracked by forestry
officers in the respective concession areas.
LUMAZ
and its members are aware of the impact of logging on
the environment, it members have already received EU
assistance to develop their business to a level where
they can process timber to internationally acceptable
standards; they now wish to establish a joint
initiative which will lead to the implementation of
verifiable forest certification and chain of custody.
LUMAZ also recognizes it is a fledgling association
and alone cannot drive forward or sustain the
initiatives required for Certification.
